Liverpool’s hopes of signing Danish international defender Simon Kjaer have suffered a blow after claims that French champions Monaco are set to swoop for the Fenerbahce star.
Turkish sports news outlet Fanatik claim that the French side have made the 28-year-old their number one target and have already made contact with the player’s representatives over a potential move.
The news will come as a disappointment to English sides Liverpool and Chelsea who have both been reported as interested in the 59-time-capped international star.
The Reds were reported by Turkish-Football to have been scouting Kjaer back in April with a view to bring him to Anfield in the summer.
Monaco are not the only French side in for the centre back, with Fanatik reporting that Marseille are ready to make an £8.5m (€10m) move for the 6’3″ defender.
Kjaer has made 52 league appearances for Fenerbahce since leaving French club Lille in 2015, scoring just three goals.
Football Insider verdict:
For £8.5m Liverpool should be doing all they can to secure the signing of 28-year-old Kjaer. An experienced international defender, he could help shore up a Reds defence which has been the achilles heel to their season. With Liverpool set to compete on four stages, including Europe, next season, Jurgen Klopp would love to improve his squad depth, and Kjaer is the sort of player who would fit in perfectly at Anfield. He offers both height and mobility at the back and would offer a commanding presence in both boxes. A bit of a steal for that price, really.
