Liverpool icon names Tottenham fringe figure as perfect transfer capture

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has said that the club’s ideal signing would be Tottenham’s fringe midfielder Victor Wanyama.
The Kenyan enforcer, who has 49 caps under his belt, has found his game time limited this season after suffering a serious injury earlier in the campaign, meaning he has managed to feature in just 13 appearances across all competitions, including nine Premier League outings, just one coming in the starting XI.
However, despite his lack of game time for the north London club, Gerrard believes he would be the perfect signing for the Reds, stating that Jurgen Klopp needs some defensive muscle in the middle of the park.
Speaking on BT Sport’s coverage of Liverpool’s Champions League win over Porto (14/02, 19:00), the former Liverpool captain said: “I think Liverpool would benefit from a monster of a centre-midfielder, a holder.
“A Wanyama-type player who does sit in and is disciplined, and he would give more protection to the back four.”
Wanyama has been in Britain since signing for Celtic from Beerschot AC, and went on to spend three years with Southampton in the Premier League before joining Spurs.
He has a total of 60 appearances under his belt for Spurs, scoring six goals, most recently netting a stunning strike in the dramatic 2-2 draw against Liverpool earlier in the season.
The Reds currently have the likes of Emre Can, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum at their disposal in the middle of the pitch, although the latter duo were joined by James Milner in a central three in their thumping 5-0 victory away at Porto on Wednesday night.
