Liverpool are interested in signing goalkeeper Martin Hitz from Bundesliga club Augsburg, according to a report.
German publication Bild claim that they are keen on the 29-year-old who has just one year remaining on his contract, while Stuttgart are also in the running.
The report details that Augsburg are about to sign Fabian Giefer from Schalke, meaning they are prepared to allow Hitz leave in the summer window.
Jurgen Klopp should know all about Hitz talent after previously managing in Germany with Borussia Dortmund and many Liverpool fans believe they need to strengthen their goalkeeper options.
The Reds alternated between Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet throughout last season, with the latter getting the nod towards the back-end of the campaign.
Hitz was an ever-present for Augsburg last season and made 34 appearances across all competitions, keeping eight clean sheets in the process.
The two-time capped Switzerland international has racked up experience in Germany and is recognised as a reliable shot stopper.
Football Insider verdict:
Liverpool currently have Mignolet and Karius at their options in goal, but Klopp may need to bring in a top-class goalkeeper if they are to challenge for silverware. Hitz has proven himself to be a good player in the Bundelisga, but there is not much to separate him with the current crop of Reds goalkeepers. They need to be slightly more ambitious in the transfer market if they want to compete for the league title. Liverpool now have the offer of Champions League football in their court and should be looking to buy the best goalkeepers in the business to help them reach the next level.
In other Liverpool transfer news, they have been handed a blow in their pursuit of a Premier League ace.
