Liverpool are considering making a move for Udinese goalkeeper Alex Meret this summer, according to a report.
The Mirror claim that the Premier League giants have lined up the 19-year-old in a bid to solve their current goalkeeping woes at Anfield.
It is said the the teenager is highly rated in his homeland and has been dubbed ‘the new Dino Zoff’ by some Italian papers in reference to the Italy all-time great keeper.
Meret is currently out on loan at Serie B outfit SPAL, but has been making a big enough impression to have caught the eye of Liverpool.
His parent club, Udinese, have also been dazzled by his performances, and are considering handing him the No.1 jersey at the club next season.
That could make it more difficult for Liverpool to land him in the summer, but Jurgen Klopp is determined to find a solution to his goalkeeping problem and Meret is believed to be a potential answer.
Klopp chose to bring in German stopper Loris Karius at the start of the season, and demoting Simon Mignolet to the role of deputy.
However, Karius made a series of high profile errors and was swiftly axed from the first-team, with Mignolet returning in his place.
But the Belgium stopper has also struggled for consistency, leaving Klopp with a major problem on his hands in pursuit of domestic glory.
Meret has kept seven clean sheets this season from 17 appearances in Italy’s second tier.
Football Insider verdict
Meret may have been doing the business in Italy this season, but the Premier League is some step up from Italy’s second tier. He looks a decent young goalkeeper, and certainly one for the future, but for Liverpool to be considering him as a potential solution to their goalkeeping problems is almost certain to go down the same route as Karius. By all means, Liverpool should consider Meret as a more long-term asset, but they must bring in an experienced, consistent performer at least for next few season – like one of their other rumoured targets, Manchester City outcast Joe Hart.
