Man City are expecting Liverpool to respond to their lacklustre campaign by recruiting a top-class forward this summer, Football Insider understands.

Pep Guardiola’s side are close to deposing the Merseyside giants as Premier League champions following a poor title defence by Jurgen Klopp’s side.

But City are anticipating a backlash from Liverpool when the transfer window opens for business.

A City source has told Football Insider the feeling at the club is that Klopp’s current team has reached the end of its natural span.

They sense some of the Anfield stars have been exhausted by the demands of the German’s high tempo playing style and their performances have suffered.

City are convinced Liverpool will respond by overhauling their first team in the upcoming window and could bring in up to five senior stars.

Chief among the targets is expected to be a new number nine with the energy and hunger to lead the line in Klopp’s team, and who has the potential to be “world class”.

With Liverpool stricken by the pandemic like most other leading clubs, they may need to sacrifice some of their stars to generate cash for new arrivals.

Football Insider revealed earlier on Monday (18th April) that Ollie Watkins has caught they eye of the Merseysiders ahead of the summer window.

Guardiola’s treble chasers anticipate a different Liverpool lining up against them next season, and privately regard them as their main title rivals.

This is despite the fact Klopp’s side face a major battle to secure a top-four Premier League finish going into tonight’s clash against Leeds United.

The Merseysiders are sixth in the table and will climb to fourth if they win at Elland Road.
