It would be the "signing of the summer" if Liverpool can secure Mohamed Salah to a new contract, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward insisted Liverpool's hopes of trophy success this season rely on Salah.

The Athletic's James Pearce reported on 19 August the club are in negotiations over a new deal for the winger with his current contract set to expire in 2023.

It is claimed he could become the Reds' best-ever paid player as he is currently on a £200,000-a-week salary.

The Merseyside giants have already secured Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Alisson and Virgil van Dijk to new deals.

"It would be massive for Liverpool," Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

"Mo Salah is Liverpool. Without Mo Salah, Liverpool have no chance of winning the Premier League or winning the Champions League.

"Mo Salah is their best player and one of the best players they've had at Liverpool.

"They need to tie him down and reward him for what he's done for the club and give him the wages, the deal that he wants.

"He's outstanding and any club in the world would take him right now.

"They have to tie him down and that would definitely be the signing of the summer."

Salah, 29, has scored 126 times and provided 49 assists in 205 games across all competitions for Jurgen Klopp's side.

The Egypt international has won the Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup with the club.
