Liverpool must make U-turn on Giorgi Mamardashvili sale plan, PSG evidence shows they’ve got it totally wrong
Liverpool succumbed to late goals as they were beaten 2-0 by PSG on Tuesday night to crash out of the Champions League.
The Merseysiders put in a spirited fight to try and overturn their two-goal first-leg deficit in the second leg of their quarter-final tie, but an Ousmane Dembele brace condemned them to an exit.
Giorgi Mamardashvili played the game between the posts for Arne Slot’s side, but his performance left a lot to be desired, as he failed to inspire confidence in the defence.
The Georgian has been filling in for Alisson of late amid the Brazilian’s ongoing injury lay-off, and Slot would have been desperate to have his number one fit for the crucial midweek clash.
Instead, he was forced to watch on as his team exited Europe, but it will have given him plenty of food for thought for Liverpool’s summer transfer plans.

Football Insider revealed back in March that Liverpool don’t want to sell Mamardashvili this summer, as they have the belief that he can be the long-term successor to Alisson.
The club hierarchy have been hopeful that the understudy can continue to learn from the first-choice at Anfield, but he proved that they were totally wrong in that stance with his display against PSG.

The gloveman looked shaky throughout the evening against high-quality opposition, and when the ball was at his feet, he regularly put his backline under needless pressure with some careless distribution.
Mamardashvili was found wanting against one of Europe’s top teams, and that should tell Liverpool everything they need to know about his future.
The Reds want to be regularly competing among Europe’s elite, and they need a world-class goalkeeper in order to do so.
Alisson has been that man for them in recent years, but Mamardashvili has proved that he never will be, and with that in mind, they should be looking to take a U-turn on their stance and try to offload him this summer.
Alisson contract plan to buy time for Liverpool to find new replacement
Football Insider revealed on Tuesday that Liverpool will evaluate Alisson’s future in the early stages of next season, and they have no intention of selling him this summer.
The veteran will have his performance analysed on a week-by-week basis in 2026-27, and if he proves that he is still capable, then he could find a new deal on the table at the end of the campaign.
That plan looks set to buy Slot and Co. valuable time to re-assess their goalkeeping department, and that could allow them to focus on adding a new face to truly challenge Alisson this summer.
They won’t want to try and replace both goalkeepers within the space of a few months, but it is vital that they line up a genuine star to replace Alisson whenever he departs.
