Liverpool need a 'miracle' to recover after Klopp reveal - pundit

Frank McAvennie insists it will take a miracle for Liverpool to return to the form that won them the Premier League.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims the Reds have to prove themselves again this season.

Injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez derailed Liverpool’s Premier League title defence last year.

Both players missed most of the campaign but both have now returned to action during pre-season.

Liverpool still managed to finish third last season but there was a significant drop off in performance compared to their title-winning campaign.

Liverpool have also struggled in the transfer market this summer with this site revealing on 27 July that Jurgen Klopp has told friends he is “not happy”.

McAvennie claims this current Liverpool side will be “done” if they can’t recover their best form.

“Liverpool claimed all their issues were down to injuries,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“That’s what you hear from the fans anyway, even though they got beat 7-2 by Villa before all that started.

“They have to prove that now, that’s the big task for Klopp.

“If they don’t recover that amazing form of a few years ago, they are done.

“It’s so hard to get back there without a bit of refreshed squad, some new faces.

“The standard was so high and last season they dropped off to a massive extent. Even the star men weren’t doing it, other than Salah.

“I think Klopp knows he can’t get them back there. They need a miracle.

“They are still very good, don’t get me wrong but will they be up there with Man City and Man United this season?

“I don’t think so.”
