Sources: Mendes opens talks over big-money Liverpool player deal - and wants it done by 14 August

Liverpool have opened new contract talks with star midfielder Fabinho, Football Insider has learned.

A potential extension for the Brazil international, 27, has long been mooted with his current agreement due to expire in 2023.

A Liverpool source has told Football Insider that super agent Jorge Mendes is negotiating the deal on behalf of Fabinho.

He is keen for it to be tied up ahead of the new Premier League season on 14 August to allow the star midfielder to then concentrate solely on his football.

Liverpool are also keen to extend Fabinho’s deal and he is in line for an upgrade on his current contract, worth around £100,000-a-week.

Jurgen Klopp is in no doubt about the value of the midfield anchorman to his side three seasons after his arrival.

Fabinho was one of Liverpool’s outstanding players last season and demonstrated his immense versatility by playing much of the season as a stand-in centre-back.

Like his countryman Alisson, who is also in talks over a new deal, the midfielder spent the summer on Copa America duty for Brazil.

Fabinho is keen to stay at Liverpool and extend his stay following a move that was negotiated by Mendes three years ago.

The agent, who also represents Diogo Jota, pushed through the move quietly from Monaco even though it was a £39million transfer.

Fabinho has gone on to play 122 times for Liverpool and will have a big role to play in the new season if they are to wrest the title crown back from Man City.
