Liverpool news: 'Frightening' Trent Alexander-Arnold training claim issued after what 'I've seen' - expert

Alex McLeish has suggested Trent Alexander-Arnold will be working hard on his defensive timing and positioning in training at Liverpool.

The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 23-year-old’s defending does not match his “frightening” attacking prowess yet.

Alexander-Arnold was beaten in the air by Villareal’s Francis Coquelin for the Spanish side’s second goal in Tuesday’s 3-2 win for the Reds.

McLeish also suggested the right-back has shown a vulnerability when opposition attackers have run at him.

He suggested Alexander-Arnold would be working in training to become the perfect all-round wing-back.

“I’m sure Jurgen knows the players and what they can do and what they cannot do.

“We’ve seen that a couple of times, people running at Trent Alexander-Arnold have caused him a little bit of a headache. Not a lot.

“His attacking ability is frightening and he’s playing in that defence so there must be an awful lot he is doing right.

But certainly, if you see an individual going at him, I’ve seen a few times that he can be, as we say, got at. Trent will probably be thinking to himself I’ve got to improve on that.

“He’s still a young man. He’ll be saying ‘I need to improve that side of my game. Maybe I’ve got to step off a wee bit with timing and things.’

“I’m sure that he’s trying to work the oracle to make himself a top 100 per cent performer rather 98 per cent.

“We’re not saying anything that’s not been seen. I have seen a couple of players who have taken him on and he’s been uncomfortable. Otherwise, he’s been imperious.”

Alexander-Arnold has contributed 18 assists in 41 appearances this season.
