Liverpool news: Pundit can't believe James Milner could quit Anfield this summer

Alan Hutton has tipped James Milner to commit to a new contract at Liverpool before the summer transfer window.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 36-year-old would be happy to stay and play a squad role rather than moving away for regular football.

As reported by the Telegraph (1 May), Liverpool have offered Milner a one-year extension to remain past this summer.

His current terms are set to expire at the end of the season.

Hutton insisted Milner would want to be playing wherever he is next term.

However, he admitted he cannot see the former England star leaving Anfield.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Of course, he’ll want to play games.

“But ultimately I think he will be happy where he’s at. This is a team that’s fighting on all fronts. He is getting the minutes on the pitch as well.

“I think Klopp sees him as a big figurehead within that squad. If you look at his stats over his whole career, he’s played a lot of football.

“It’s not like he’s just been that kind of journeyman and gone about different clubs. He’s played a lot of football.

“I think he’d be happy staying at such a big club.”

Milner has played 35 times across all competitions for Liverpool this campaign.

He has been utilised in several positions, including central midfield, defensive midfield and right-back.

The former Newcastle and Manchester City ace has made 285 appearances for the Reds to date.
