Liverpool news: Pundit hails 'massive' James Milner development after what he's seen

James Milner is still “so important” for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp despite his advancing years.

That is according to former Leeds striker Noel Whelan, who was speaking exclusively to Football Insider in the wake of a “massive” update on his Anfield future.

According to The Telegraph (1 May), Milner has been offered a one-year extension at Liverpool and the player seems “certain” to put pen to paper in order to prolong his stay on Merseyside.

The veteran utility man’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season.

Milner delivered a timely reminder of his importance during the win over former club Newcastle on Saturday (30 April) – turning in a man-of-the-match display at St James’ Park.

Whelan suggested his performance epitomised how important the 61-cap England man is at Liverpool.

“It’s massive news,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He’s such an important player for them, and that’s why he keeps getting these contracts.

“There’s nothing else to it. He gives Liverpool real quality, he’s still fit as a fiddle, and he’s a real leader out there.

“He’ll be vitally important to knitting that dressing room together, along with Jordan Henderson.

“They won’t be letting the standards drop, and it’s so important for Jurgen Klopp to have players like that around all the time.

“I think the game against Newcastle just showed what a good professional he is and how important he still is.”

Milner joined Liverpool from Man City on a free transfer in 2015.

The 36-year-old is fourth on the all-time list for Premier League appearance-makers – having notched 586 top-flight outings.
