Liverpool are planning to bid for AS Monaco’s Thomas Lemar in January, in the belief being that the Reds are now his first-choice club, according to a report.

The Independent claims that the Reds will go back in for Lemar after having two bids rejected for him in the summer.

Jurgen Klopp has had a “longstanding interest” in the winger and despite Lemar nearly joining Arsenal in the summer, it’s believed the Reds are his first choice.

A previous report suggested that Arsenal have abandoned their pursuit of the winger due to Arsene Wenger believing a deal is near impossible to complete.

However, the Reds may face competition from Barcelona according to a report in the Mirror, with the player reportedly looking for £250,000-a-week. That would cost Liverpool a stunning £13m a year in wages on top of any fee.

Football Insider verdict:

Lemar had Arsenal and Liverpool both competing in the summer for his services, and it now looks like the Reds are winning the race. Lemar is an exciting talent and would no doubt flourish in the Premier League, however he’s not what the Reds are lacking. The winger is a fantastic attacking prospect but he wouldn’t necessarily be a better option than what they already have. So while it would be a coup to sign the young talent, surely their money is better off being spent on other areas of the team. The Lemar deal looks like it would take a huge chunk of the transfer budget.
