Report: Liverpool to bid up to £36m for Barcelona player, Tottenham in the race

By Aramide Oladipo

Liverpool are interested in signing Barcelona forward Rafinha during the summer transfer market, according to a report.

Mundo Deportivo claims Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has asked the club’s sporting director Michael Edwards to step up their pursuit in the 24-year-old as he is prepared to offer between £26million and £36million for the Brazilian.

The Spanish newspaper claims that the Catalan club would welcome this offer despite the forward having a release clause in his contract worth around £67million.

The report claims that fellow Premier League rivals Arsenal and Tottenham have also been tracking Rafinha along with Italian giants AC and Inter Milan.

The forward is currently focusing on his return to full fitness but he is reportedly desperate to play more football next season in order to boost his chances of featuring for the Brazil national team in next year’s World Cup.

It is said that Barcelona are hoping that they can use Liverpool’s interest in Rafinha to help negotiate a deal that would see Philippe Coutinho arrive at the Camp Nou this summer, with the latter reportedly asking Klopp to sanction his move to Spain.

This follows up from the story in Don Balon which reported that Barcelona were planning to involve Rafinha alongside Andre Gomes in an part-exchange deal for Coutinho.

However, Liverpool are reportedly adamant that the two potential transfer deals are completely separate from each other.

Rafinha’s current contract at the Camp Nou runs out in 2020.

Football Insider verdict

Rafinha would be a welcome addition to the Liverpool squad however the Reds must make sure that they do no lose Coutinho as part of the deal. Rafinha is a fine player who contributed with seven goals and five assists last season but he will need time to adapt to Premier League football. Although his versatility allows him to play in the midfield as well as in a forward position, Liverpool already possess players such as Roberto Firmino, Divock Origi and Saido Mane to play in these positions. £36million is not a lot of money in this current market for a young player who already has vast experience at the top level but it is a gamble as he has not proven himself to be one of the best talents in Europe.
