Adama Traore is “nowhere near” the level of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane and Liverpool should think twice before signing him.
That is the view of former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the possibility of the Reds signing the 25-year-old this summer.
According to a report from El Gol Digital, the Premier League champions are ‘on the verge’ of signing the Wolves winger who has two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract at Molineux.
Football Insider revealed in April 2020 that Jurgen Klopp’s side had shortlisted the Spain international as a potential attacking option.
However, Whelan claims Traore does not have the technical ability to provide adequate cover for Mane or Salah.
“Mane and Salah are on a different level,” he told Football Insider.
“I am sorry, but they are streets ahead of Traore so could he provide adequate backup? I’m not sure.
“Look, Traore is a very good player but he does not have the finishing touches of a Mane or Salah. He doesn’t have the intelligence.
“He has strength and he has got pace and while his end product has got a lot better over the years, you cannot put him in the same bracket as Salah or Mane. He is not as good a technical player. He can drive past people and he has great pace but he’s not on their level. He is nowhere near them.
“Traore has been sitting on the bench at Wolves at lot this season though and I am sure he would rather sit on the bench at Anfield.”
Speaking to Goal about Traore last year, Reds defender Trent Alexander-Arnold said: “It’s almost not human the way he can change direction and go.
“I’ve never felt so powerless against someone.”
