Liverpool to rival Premier League trio for Chelsea fringe player (not Fabregas) - report

By Will Butcher

Liverpool face a fight to sign Andreas Christensen as Chelsea have no plans to sell their up-and-coming defender, according to a report.

The Daily Mail claim Liverpool join Premier League trio Southampton, Leicester and Man City in keeping tabs on the 21-year-old, as he continues to shine on loan in the German Bundesliga.

It is believed that Borussia Monchengladbach are also keen on a permanent the Denmark international, after he has made 40 appearances for the German giants this season during a season-long loan.

Christensen has managed just three appearances for Chelsea, and is on the fringes of Antonio Conte’s squad behind the likes of Gary Cahill, David Luiz, Kurt Zouma and Nathan Ake.

However, it looks unlikely that he will be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer as the Blues look to further the 10-time international’s development.

During his 40 Gladbach appearances, the defender has helped the Champions League outfit keep 10 clean sheets as his temporary side struggle way down in ninth place.

With his contract at Stamford Bridge set to end in just over three years’ time and most of his career left ahead of him, Liverpool and any other interested parties will have to stump up a decent amount of money to sign Christensen this summer.

If Liverpool do convince him to make the switch it could see the Reds lure two stars from Chelsea this summer, as the Daily Express claimed the Reds are also in the race to sign Spanish playmaker Cesc Fabregas.

Football Insider verdict:

Liverpool need defensive reinforcements. At the back, this season, Jurgen Klopp has seen his side concede too many goals which has been a major factor in their failure to compete for the Premier League title. Question marks still surround the performances of Dejan Lovren, while Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan have been inconsistent since signing in the summer at Anfield. Although unproven in the Premier League, Christensen has shined for Gladbach in the German top flight and has also made four Champions League appearances this season. Given patience, the young defender could prove to be an inspired signing.

In other Liverpool transfer news, the Reds are also among three clubs reportedly eyeing this Southampton defender.
