Liverpool star Harvey Elliott 'victim of circumstance' after confirmed news - pundit

Paul Robinson has claimed Harvey Elliott is “a victim of circumstance” after the Liverpool midfielder narrowly missed out on the England squad.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and Three Lions goalkeeper suggested the 19-year-old did not make the cut because the competition in midfield is too high.

On Thursday (15 September), Gareth Southgate announced his 28-man squad for upcoming Nations League games against Italy and Germany.

According to Sky Sports‘ Rob Dorsett (15 September), Elliott was under consideration for his first ever call up to the senior squad.

However, the attacking midfielder did not make the cut and will instead be with England’s under-21s.

When asked by Football Insider if Elliott should have been included in the squad by Gareth Southgate, Robinson said:

“He has played in every game this season but his performances have been indifferent. You cannot say that he has been consistent.

“He is a great option for Gareth Southgate to have but I think it is a bit early for him.

“He is probably a victim of circumstance. There is a lot of players in that position.

“I think we will see Elliott come into the senior England setup next year after the World Cup.”

Elliott has been a regular starter for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the 2022-23 campaign and has made nine appearances across all competitions.

The teenager has been capped three times by England’s under-21s.
