Why Liverpool should make January swoop for Arsenal proven player

COMMENT By Emma Sanders

Liverpool should target Arsenal left-back Kieran Gibbs in the January window.

The 27-year-old’s contract is due to end next summer and he has still not landed a regular first team spot, with Nacho Monreal taking up a regular role at left-back.

This means he will likely be available for a bargain price next month.

Gibbs is an experienced player who has made 10 appearances for England since 2010 and he has already notched up 131 Premier League games for the Gunners.

However, at the age of 27 he is struggling for regular action and Liverpool could be a perfect destination for the player and he suits the needs of the club.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have made a great start to the season and look set to challenge for a Champions League spot, meaning Gibbs will still have the opportunity to play at a level similar to that of Arsenal.

Liverpool are short on left-back options, although James Milner has grown into an accomplished player in that position, but Gibbs could be perfect back-up and would certainly provide tough competition for the vice-captain.

Alberto Moreno is yet to demonstrate consistency and his defensive solidity has been hugely criticised. Squad depth in defence seems to be lacking for Liverpool and Gibbs’ arrival would go some way to improving that.

With Arsene Wenger due to depart and Gibbs’ contract also drawing to a close, Liverpool should make a move for the defender in the summer at his current rate of £11.5 million.
