Finance guru accuses Downing Street of 'smoke and mirrors' as Liverpool braced for 'biggest hit'

Liverpool are among the clubs who will take the “biggest hit” from the introduction of an independent regulator for English football.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Government gave the green light to roll out the regulator.

It was confirmed last Monday (25 April) that an independent body will be set up to safeguard clubs against mismanagement.

The Premier League and FA were, according to the Daily Mail last Friday (29 April), blindsided by the announcement.

It is claimed that Number 10 were attempting to push the Angela Raynor sexism row off the top of the news agenda.

Plumley accused the Government of “smoke and mirrors” in their handling of the independent regulator launch.

“There is always smoke and mirrors,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“You can see the way the Premier League are going to play this too. It’s going to be block, dilute and deflect at every turn.

“It does hurt them the most, if that is the right term to use. It will be Premier League clubs who take the biggest hit.

“But we have to think about the whole of the Football League as a collective with this.”

Multiple officials from Premier League clubs have spoken out publicly against the independent regulator.

But all of the so-called ‘Big Six’ have so far stayed out of the discussion.
