Confirmed: 25-year-old signs new contract after reported January interest

By Will Butcher

Emil Forsberg has extended his contract with German side RB Leipzig after reportedly interesting Liverpool in January.

The Sun claimed that the Merseyside club were considering a £20million move for the 25-year-old back in January, as he continues to provide a creative spark with the Bundesliga side.

However, Leipzig have ended speculation over Forsberg’s future by tying their star player down until the summer of 2022 after he put pen to paper on a contract extension.

The ambitious German side, who remain second in the Bundesliga table despite only getting promoted last season, revealed the news on their official Twitter account.

Leipzig’s number 10 has had a hand in 14 goals in just 16 league and cup outings this season, inspiring his side in the attacking third. He has nine assists in just 16 Bundesliga outings.

A 24-time Sweden international, Forsberg can play either out wide, in the number 10 role or as a striker himself and was identified to provide competition to Liverpool’s attackers.

The playmaker moved to RB Leipzig for just £3million in 2015 from Swedish giants Malmo, but his stock has only continued to rise after his impressive contributions in front of goal.

Football Insider verdict:

The Reds’ form has been significantly affected by the injury earlier in the season to Philippe Coutinho and the departure of Sadio Mane to the African Cup of Nations. With a lack of quality reinforcements, the Merseyside giants’ title challenge has been severely affected and bringing a player like Forsberg to Anfield could have provided top-quality cover for the likes of Mane, Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino when they were unable to play. Leipzig have moved to ensure they keep their man in Germany for the forseeable future, or get to command an even greater amount of money for his signature if he leaves in the summer.

In other Liverpool transfer news, a summer move for this Uruguay international is on the cards.
