Liverpool 'worried' about Virgil van Dijk after 'weird' development - pundit

Liverpool are worried about Virgil van Dijk getting injured after he missed his side’s game against Benfica.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the defender’s fitness.

Van Dijk, 30, didn’t play as Liverpool drew 3-3 with Benfica on Wednesday (13 April).

This was only the third time Liverpool have conceded three goals this season after draws against Brentford and Leicester.

Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate and Kostas Tsimikas started at the back as goals from Goncalo Ramos, Darwin Nunez and Roman Yaremchuk cost the Reds a win.

When asked if Liverpool will be worried about their form if Van Dijk gets injured, McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild, “They will be worried about him getting injured.

“That’s why he didn’t play last night. Liverpool didn’t think the game was won, Klopp wouldn’t be that arrogant.

“But they knew they could give him a rest because he has been brilliant for them again this season.

“So it’s not a huge concern for me though it was weird he would miss a game like this. They need to keep him fit for this run in.

“He won’t miss many games now so it was a risk they could take in a game they knew they wouldn’t lose.”

Liverpool progressed thanks to their 3-1 win in the reverse fixture against Benfica and will now face Villarreal in the semi-finals.

The Reds are next in action against Manchester City in Saturday’s (16 April) FA Cup semi-final.
