Alexis Mac Allister told Liverpool new contract plan
Alexis Mac Allister has been told he must prove he deserves to be offered a new contract at Liverpool, sources have told Football Insider.
The 27-year-old remains an important part of Andoni Iraola's squad, but concerns have started to grow about his long-term future after a difficult spell last season.
Liverpool are currently in no rush to extend his deal, which is set to run until 2028 as things stand, and have continued to delay talks over a potential extension.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Mac Allister must improve on last season's displays if he wants to land a new Liverpool contract.
This comes after the Argentina international confessed he has been upset by the lack of talks over his future, having hoped to be offered a new deal alongside his teamates.
Despite his frustrations, however, Mac Allister remains an important part of Iraola's plans for the season and will be given the opportunity to earn an extension.
How does Alexis Mac Allister feel about his Liverpool future?
Football Insider revealed on 25 September that Mac Allister is "unhappy" about not having been offered a new contract despite his role in the squad at Liverpool.
His midfield partners Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai have both penned new deals in the last few months, leading to concerns about the lack of talks with the Argentine.
However, after a difficult string of displays last season, Mac Allister has been told he must prove he deserves a new deal if he wants to re-open talks with Liverpool.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "He’s got two years left on his current contract as well, he says he's happy Liverpool will continue to give his all between now and then.
"Alexis Mac Allister is in control right now, if he can perform well become a key man in Andoni Arreola's side then there's every possibility that those contract talks could reopen.
"There could be something agreed between Liverpool and Mac Allister, but he will have to improve upon his performances last season.
"All Mac Allister can do right now is continue to impress, perform at a high level and if he continues to do that there's every chance that maybe a new contract could be discussed."
Could Mac Allister be lured away from Liverpool?
Amid the ongonig doubts about Mac Allister's long-term future at Liverpool and confusion over his contract situation, speculation has grown about potential suitors.
Clubs in the Premier League and across Europe are believed to be keeping tabs on his situation and could pounce should no new contract talks take place.
Football Insider revealed ahead of the summer transfer window that Real Madrid have been keeping a close eye on Mac Allister's situation and could finally make a move.
Los Blancos have been long-term admirers of the Argentina international, and despite never having made a formal offer, have been plotting a move behind the scenes.
Mac Allister, meanwhile, has never ruled out a move to the Spanish giants and has previously left the door open to the switch, inviting the growing possibility of a move.
