Liverpool reportedly do not currently intend to extend Alexis Mac Allister's contract, which expires in 2028.

The 27-year-old would likely be forced to leave next summer if he is not handed a new deal, with decision-makers unlikely to allow him to leave on a free transfer.

The Reds want to sign a new midfielder next summer and have targeted the likes of Lamine Camara and Alex Scott.

Mac Allister publicly spoke in September of his disappointment at not having been offered a new deal at Liverpool yet, following the announcements of extensions for both Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai earlier this year.

The Argentina international has been a key part of Andoni Iraola's team this season so far, and will hope for a change of heart at Anfield.

Alexis Mac Allister enjoying impressive Liverpool form

Mac Allister has started the season in fine form, and the suggestion may well be made that he is playing for a new contract.

Yet good form is nothing new for the midfielder, who has been a consistently strong presence for Liverpool in the three years since he signed from Brighton.

This campaign has seen the 27-year-old in fine goal-scoring form, already just three goals away from matching his best-ever season tally for the Reds.

But there has been much more to his game, as well. In the Premier League, Mac Allister is averaging 3.87 accurate long balls per game, better than 94 per cent of other midfielders.

And that's not all. The Argentine averages 16.8 line-breaking passes per game, 2.03 clearances, 5.35 recoveries, 2.58 tackles and 1.11 chances created.

Perhaps most impressively, Mac Allister is getting 2.03 shots off per game from deep midfield, bettering 86 per cent of other Premier League midfielders.

What did Mac Allister say about his contract situation?

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool do ultimately decide to hand Mac Allister a new deal, with the player's desire in no question.

"I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract which, of course, makes me very, very sad," he said in September.

""Everyone can see that I give my 100% for this football club every single day in training and games. Of course, I can have very good games [and] bad games, like everyone, but I always give my best.

"I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it. At the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn't get mine. Of course, there is still time. The fans don't need to worry because I will give my 100% until the last day I am here."

Should Liverpool let Mac Allister go, they will be making a sizable mistake that another club, potentially in the Premier League, will certainly benefit from.
