Andoni Iraola has transformed Liverpool stalwart, he was like a new signing vs Brentford
Andoni Iraola's arrival at Liverpool has lit a spark in a long-term Liverpool player.
The Reds return immediately to winning ways against Brentford following their defeat against Manchester City.
This time it was the Anfield side who benefitted from the opposition going down to 10 men rather than the other way around.
The result was important for restoring confidence after a difficult fixture last week, with there also being encouraging signs from an individual perspective.
One experienced member of the squad, in particular, appears to be benefiting from the change in approach under Iraola more than most.
And that influence could prove crucial in the coming weeks for the Spanish manager.
Alexis Mac Allister is being brought back to his best at Liverpool this season
Last season, Alexis Mac Allister was an incredibly frustrating figure to watch at Liverpool.
Whether it was down to him not getting pre-season, or down to Arne Slot underperforming as manager, is unclear, but the fact is that the Argentine looked far off the pace.
The midfielder has routinely been linked with a move away, but right now, he is looking like a new signing for Liverpool.
Against Brentford, he was one of Liverpool's best players on the pitch, constantly getting on the ball and looking to keep the tempo of the match moving.
Against the Bees, the 27-year-old generated the most expected assists with 0.32, and also completed 100 per cent of his three dribbles attempted.
Additionally, his 99 touches were the most in the match, showing he was always an outlet for his teammates to pass to.
Defensively, he won seven out of 10 of his duels, while also completing the second-most tackles on the pitch with two.
Only Jeremy Jacquet had more (four) than the midfielder.
This game against Brentford is not an isolated performance either, but rather another in a string of excellent showings.
Mac Allister fighting for new Liverpool contract
Mac Allister had previously spoken about the fact that no discussions had taken place over a new Liverpool contract.
His current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2028, meaning if no breakthrough is made, there is every chance the Reds look to recoup funds through selling him after this season.
However, with the way he is playing, tying him down to new and updated terms would be smart.
At his very best, there are not many who could come in and replace what the South American brings to Liverpool.
