Ex-PGMOL chief re-analyses Jarell Quansah red card footage in England win vs Mexico

Jarell Quansah was rightfully shown a straight red card as England beat Mexico 3-2 to reach the World Cup quarter-final on Monday.

That is the opinion of former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

The defender was dismissed by referee Alireza Faghani in the second half, with 10-men England narrowly winning via goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane.

Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez scored for the hosts, with both teams also scoring from the spot on a night full of controversy and flashpoints at the Azteca.

Quansah's challenge had initially been ignored by the referee, who was swiftly advised by VAR to go to the screen for a second look and needed just moments to produce the red card.

England will play Norway in the quarter-finals, after they shocked Brazil 2-1 on Sunday.

Keith Hackett backs Jarell Quansah decision

England have had all manner of problems on the right of defence throughout the World Cup.

First-choice, Reece James, suffered a hamstring injury and has been missing since the second group stage game against Ghana.

Tino Livramento may well have been his replacement, but the Newcastle United man was ruled out before the tournament started and was replaced in the squad by Trevor Chalobah.

Djed Spence filled the position against DR Congo but was unimpressive, with Quansah replacing him against Mexico.

But Tuchel would rue the decision when the defender steamed into a challenge with Jesus Gallardo.

The 23-year-old made contact with the ball, and Faghani let play go on despite huge protest from the Mexican bench.

Replays showed that Quansah had gone over the ball and made contact with his studs high into the shin of Gallardo.

"The challenge by Jarell Qunasah, who was having a very good game, fulfilled serious foul play," Hackett told Football Insider. "It was the correct decision to issue a red card."

Thomas Tuchel's bizarre decision proving costly

It was not massively surprising to see Tuchel opt against taking Trent Alexander-Arnold to the World Cup after an underwhelming opening season for Real Madrid.

But when England's back-up right-back was injured, it was a surprise to see that the German not only chose against calling up Alexander-Arnold, but that he ignored any replacement right-back at all.

His team have paid for that, with issues on the right of defence dominating the narrative throughout the past few weeks.

It remains to be seen how Tuchel addresses the situation against Norway, after it almost cost him everything on Monday.
