Federico Chiesa will look to leave Liverpool in January if he struggles for game time after returning from injury, sources have told Football Insider.

Chiesa is currently sidelined with a muscle injury, but is expected to return to training during the international break later this month.

He was left out of Liverpool's Champions League squad for a second season running last week, alongside Wataru Endo.

Andoni Iraola included him in his pre-season plans before injury woes struck, as Chiesa stayed put at Anfield despite speculation linking him with a return to Serie A.

The 28-year-old is set to look for a move away in the new year if he struggles for regular minutes under Iraola in the coming months.

Chiesa only started one Premier League game last season as he remained on the periphery of the squad under Arne Slot.

Federico Chiesa could leave Liverpool in January

Chiesa was widely expected to leave Liverpool in the summer window after a frustrating 2025-26 campaign.

He registered three goals and assists each in 36 appearances across all competitions, ultimately being included in their UCL squad for the knockout stages.

The versatile winger has lost his place in the Italy squad since joining Liverpool, with his last international appearance coming at Euro 2024.

Iraola has bolster his attacking options on either flank in the last few months through the arrivals of Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz.

Chiesa is one of the few Reds stars who counts right wing as his natural position after Mo Salah's departure, but it remains to be seen if he features regularly in the league going forward.

He has been keen to stay on Merseyside for now while fighting for more game time, but that stance could change in the coming months.

Chiesa's future could well be decided by the Reds' transfer plans, with the club still keen to add more depth to Iraola's squad in January.

The Gambian international emerged onto their radar in the summer as Brighton rejected two separate offers from Liverpool for his services.
