Florian Wirtz 'wants to join Bayern Munich' as Liverpool exit on the cards

Florian Wirtz would be interested in joining Bayern Munich if they can reach an agreement with Liverpool in the near future.

The 23-year-old has struggled since his big-money move to Anfield last summer, leading to speculation that Liverpool could be willing to let him go after the turn of the year.

While a mid-season exit would be considered unlikely, Bayern Munich are keeping a close eye on his situation, and could look to test the Reds' resolve with an offer.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Wirtz has been frustrated in English football and could be tempted to return to the Bundesliga.

Bayern Munich have been long-term admirers of the Germany midfielder having missed out when Liverpool landed a £116million deal in 2025, and could now reignite that interest.

Andoni Iraola is still utilising Wirtz as part of his starting XI this season, but the club have not ruled out letting him go, and he could now look to return to his home country.

Could Liverpool accept offers for Florian Wirtz?

Football Insider revealed on 19 September that Liverpool are preparing to field offers for Wirtz in January, despite being reluctant to let him leave in the mid-season window.

The midfielder has continued to struggle at Anfield and has not had the desired impact since his big-money move from Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

Despite some impressive performances during that spell, he has largely struggled to adapt to the Premier League, and is said to be keen on a return to the Bundesliga.

"The main problem for Wirtz," Brown told Football Insider, "Is he has seemingly struggled to adapt to the Premier League.

"He hasn't got to grips with the physicality or the tempo of things, that's why most of his better performances for Liverpool have been in European competitions.

"It's a difficult situation for them to be in because of the money they spent on him, but from the player's point of view, it wouldn't surprise me to see him go back to Germany.

"I'm sure, if an offer was to come in, then he'd want to join Bayern Munich because he would be a much better fit for the way they play.

"He could go back to a league where he is familiar, he knows he can play at a high level, and they know he can perform at his best.

"So as I say, from the player's point of view, it's something that I'm sure he would be keen to do because it makes a lot of sense, even if it might be difficult for Liverpool."

Where is Wirtz's most likely destination?

Despite the links with a return to the Bundesliga, there are a number of clubs across Europe who could move to land Wirtz should he be made available at Liverpool.

Chelsea are among those who have been linked, given his strong relationship with Xabi Alonso from their time together at Bayer Leverkusen.

However, former Everton scout Bryan King told Football Insider on 15 September that Wirtz is likely to head "straight to Bayern Munich" if he is allowed to leave Liverpool.

A return to the Bundesliga is considered most likely given his struggles in the Premier League, with the opportunity to reignite his previous form set to prove enticing.

There remains some hope that Iraola can unlock Wirtz, though, as he continues to rely on him as part of his starting XI and is keen to see improvements in his game.
