'I'm told this is how Cody Gakpo really feels about being denied Man City move by Liverpool'

Cody Gakpo is happy to stay at Liverpool despite missing out on a move to Manchester City, sources have told Football Insider.

Liverpool rejected an £80million bid for the 27-year-old on transfer deadline day, ruling out any possibility of his departure despite having entertained offers.

The Netherlands international was believed to be open to the idea of a move to Man City, while Tottenham also held talks and were among his long-term admirers.

However, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Gakpo is not expected to cause any issues after he missed out on a move.

Instead, sources say he is keen to get back to work under Andoni Iraola and continue his strong start to the season as part of the new boss' ambitious plans.

Gakpo has already registered a goal and an assist in three games so far this season, and will remain an important part of Iraola's squad following the transfer deadline.

What do Liverpool have planned for Cody Gakpo?

Football Insider revealed on 4 September that Iraola is planning to utilise Gakpo as an important part of his squad given his ability to play across a number of positions.

The forward's versatility is seen as a key asset, as he has proved he can cover both wings as well as play through the middle, which will be important across all competitions.

While sources say he was interested in a move away, he is not unhappy at Anfield, and will not cause any issues for Iraola and his staff over the coming weeks.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Gakpo is such a versatile player for Liverpool, and I think that's the key. Liverpool didn't really want to lose that.

"In the end they decided to keep Cody Gakpo and that just shows that Andoni Arreola didn't really want to lose the Dutchman at that stage of the transfer window.

"But Gakpo is a good professional; he'll get his head down and despite that interest from Manchester City and the potential of a move there.

"I'm told he is keen to get on with things at Liverpool, to do his best whenever he's called on, and to remain as a key part of Andoni Iraola's plans for this season.

"He's still under a long-term contract at Anfield until 2030, so there are no concerns over him that he might be unsettled or anything like that."

Could Gakpo leave Liverpool in January?

Despite having missed out on a late move to Man City, speculation has already begun about the January transfer window, and whether Gakpo could eventually move on.

Clubs are already believed to be looking towards the mid-season window, and the level of interest in the Netherlands international is unlikely to die down in that time.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that while Gakpo will not give Liverpool any problems over a move, he may have one eye on the mid-season window.

Both Man City and Tottenham made attacking signings late in the transfer window despite missing out on the Liverpool man, and were able to strengthen their squad.

However, both sides, especially Tottenham, are believed to have retained their strong interest and are now being backed to return with a new move in 2027.
