Cody Gakpo's stance revealed after Liverpool 'clear the air' talks

Cody Gakpo is expected to remain fully committed to the Liverpool cause despite missing out on a deadline-day move to Manchester City.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Dutchman is content with staying put at Anfield and won't cause issues for Andoni Iraola.

This comes after the Reds rejected an £85million bid for the 27-year-old from City, due to the fact that they were unable to secure a replacement for him in time.

Wyness believes that Gakpo will remain a key part of Iraola's plans, and suggested that it is not out of the question that he could potentially get his move in January.

The wideman had seemingly been keen on the move to the Etihad Stadium, but will now be staying at Anfield.

Gakpo has made a bright start to the new Premier League season, having notched a goal and an assist from Liverpool's opening two games.

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Liverpool deserve praise for the way that they have handled the situation surrounding Gakpo's future.

The Scottish businessman made it clear that the club will have sat down with the player to "clear the air" after his move was denied, and he does not expect any issues to arise in terms of his conduct moving forward.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained how he expects that Gakpo won't be fazed by staying at Liverpool.

"I think they were quite right. As we just talked about Everton selling Beto before the replacement was in, here Liverpool thought we couldn't find a replacement, so they kept hold of Gakpo," he said.

"I think they'll have had the clear-the-air talks with the player. He'll get minutes; he's going to play there, and they'll get his value up for if he's sold in January or next summer. 

"I don't think there's an issue. I think he's a quality player, and I think playing in the team he's in, I think he's going to be committed, and he'll move forward.

"A lot of the players understand business is business, and it didn't quite work out, but they had to have a replacement, and I think players understand that as well. 

"I think Gakpo will still perform well and, you know, they've got European football, and he's on the biggest stage."

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on Tuesday that Ismaila Sarr "doesn't want to be at Crystal Palace" after his move to Liverpool fell through.

The Eagles refused to let the Senegal international leave on this occasion, despite him making it clear that he wanted to move to Anfield.

Sarr was being lined up as Gakpo's replacement on Merseyside, but Brown outlined that a deal could still be on the cards in January.

The former recruitment man does not expect Sarr's stance towards Palace to change, which leaves the door open for Liverpool to move back in next time.
