Jarell Quansah 'must be allowed 'to play for England vs Norway after 'shock decision' - ex-FIFA official

FIFA must suspend Jarell Quansah's red card after being sent off in England's dramatic World Cup win over Mexico.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that FIFA have backed themselves into a corner by setting a precedent.

In the 54th minute, the former Liverpool defender was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a high challenge on Jesus Gallardo.

If Thomas Tuchel wasn't already facing a huge problem in the right-back position, he certainly is now, but it is all of his own making, or so supporters believe.

Fans believe that Quansah should be allowed to face Norway on Saturday, 11 July, though, after USA striker Folarin Balogun had his red card suspended by FIFA.

It is understood that The White House asked for the decision to be reviewed, and just days before USA's clash with Belgium, there is now outrage off the pitch.

Jarell Quansah should follow 'same process' as Folarin Balogun

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett has suggested that the two incidents are identical and deserve to be treated as such retrospectively.

"I think everyone in football was shocked yesterday when a decision was made to defer the suspension of the American player who received a red card," he said.

"That in itself is unacceptable. And obviously Belgium are very unhappy. But they've set a precedent.

"They've actually set it, and knowing FIFA, they'll not go back on that particular decision. The outcome is that from now to the end of this tournament, they must apply the same process.

"So, the England player last night, who committed a serious foul challenge and was correctly sanctioned by the referee with a red card, should now go through the same process and have that red card deferred.

"I don't think that's good for football by the way, but if it's happened to the USA player on home tround, home territory, then it must apply to the player for England.

"Now they're gonna say, 'Well, it's different'. It's not different. Both challenges were red cards."

Thomas Tuchel has shot himself in the foot at 2026 World Cup

Plenty has been made about Tuchel's decisions ahead of the World Cup, and everything that supporters said before a ball was kicked appear to be coming to fruition.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Lewis Hall were both surprise absentees in the Three Lions' squad, and that is coming back to bite the head coach.

Declan Rice played at right-back in the closing stages against DR Congo, with Quansah featuring out of position until being sent off against Mexico.

Reece James clearly cannot be relied upon to stay fit, and with no other natural right-backs in the squad, Tuchel appears to have made quite an error.
