Jeremie Frimpong has no future under Andoni Iraola - 'He is not Liverpool standard'
Liverpool could allow Jeremie Frimpong to leave the club in January as they accelerate their plans to sign his replacement.
The 25-year-old has endured a difficult period since his £29.5million move to Anfield last summer, leading to growing concerns about the lack of quality in his position.
His poor performances culminated in Liverpool's 3-0 defeat to Man City, where he was targeted by Jeremy Doku and proved unable to deal with the potent City attack.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Frimpong is not of the standard required to play for Liverpool, and the club are now realising that.
This comes after Jamie Carragher slammed the right-back on commentary during the City game, as he labelled him "all over the place" and criticised his role in Rayan Cherki's goal.
While Gary Neville and other pundits defended Frimpong's display, it is clear that those at Liverpool are beginning to lose patience with his below-par performances.
Could Liverpool look to replace Jeremie Frimpong?
Football Insider revealed on 11 October that Liverpool are stepping up their plans to replace Frimpong as they continue to assess potential signings at right-back.
Despite having started the first two Premier League games under Andoni Iraola, he has dropped to the bench in the last four, during which time they have kept three clean sheets.
It is now becoming clear that Frimpong does not have a future in Iraola's side, and plans are being put in place to find his replacement in the January transfer window.
"Liverpool are now starting to realise what a lot of us already knew about Jeremie Frimpong," Brown told Football Insider.
"I've always had doubts about how good he was, and it was a surprise when Liverpool identified him as the player they wanted to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold last year.
"He's okay going forward, but his defensive work leaves a lot to be desired, and when you're playing in games like the one against Man City that is going to get exposed.
"They brought on Jeremy Doku, and Frimpong couldn't handle him, he caused him huge problems and then Cherki sent him flying for his goal as well.
"You could hear on commentary, Jamie Carragher wasn't happy with him, and that will come from watching him every week, they're starting to realise he is not Liverpool standard.
"I think the manager knows that too, because he started a couple of games earlier this season and now has dropped down to the bench even though they're short of options at right-back.
"It's a position they're going to be looking to address when the window opens, and I would be surprised if Frimpong has much of a future in this team."
Which right-backs are on Liverpool's radar?
Given their growing doubts about Frimpong's future and his role in the side, Liverpool have begun working to identify potential targets to strengthen at right-back.
The position has been a concern since Alexander-Arnold's departure, while Conor Bradley's serious injury blow has also sparked concerns about a lack of depth.
Football Insider revealed on 9 October that Liverpool have identified Barcelona star Jules Kounde as a target in the position after he dropped out of Hansi Flick's starting XI.
The Reds have been told an offer of £60million could be enough to prise him away from the Catalan club, and they have been placed on alert by his potential availability.
Since Iraola took over, strengthening in other areas took priority, but the Reds are still of the belief that adding a new right-back to their squad could be key in the coming windows.
