Liverpool backed to complete 'seven' new signings as Alisson Becker could be next big name to go
Andoni Iraola already has major concerns about his Liverpool squad after being appointed the new manager.
With a two-year deal signed and the formal unveiling now done, he is already making plans for his arrival at Anfield ahead of pre-season.
Having assessed the squad after being approached, there are a number of glaring issues which will need to be addressed quickly after he takes over.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Iraola will have to address at least “six or seven” positions during the transfer window.
The entire back line and goalkeeper with need replacing, while the addition of a new winger and striker are key issues ahead of a busy summer for Liverpool.
Could Liverpool be set for a major squad overhaul?
Football Insider revealed in April that at least five star players could leave Liverpool alongside Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah this summer.
The futures of Alisson and Virgil van Dijk remain up in the air, while Robertson and Ibrahima Konate will leave this month, and a new right-back is needed.
Salah’s departure and Hugo Ekitike’s lengthy injury blow have caused issues up front, and Iraola is aware he will have a busy first window at Anfield.
“Iraola is going to face some major issues immediately,” Brown told Football Insider.
“We were expecting his arrival to be announced, so he will already have assessed his squad, and he will know there are problems there.
“I would say there are probably six or seven positions with players already in need of replacing.
“Look through the team one by one: Alisson could be leaving, we know Robertson and Konate are going, Van Dijk is 34 and ageing now, and they need a right-back.
“Further up the pitch, Salah has gone, and Ekitike is out until next year with this injury, so there’s another two players needing to be replaced.
“Already, that’s multiple key positions that need dealing with, and the manager will know that better than anybody, he will be prepared.
“It’s now about whether he will get that backing, and I expect he will, to make the changes that need to be made.
“Ultimately, the goal for Iraola at Liverpool is going to be to make them successful again, but to do that, he’s going to need a lot of support.”
When will Andoni Iraola become the new Liverpool manager?
Brown told Football Insider on 1 June that Iraola has agreed to become the Liverpool manager, having given the green light before Slot’s departure.
Despite interest from rivals across Europe including AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and Crystal Palace, the 43-year-old always prioritised the position at Anfield.
His work at Bournemouth to lead them into the Europa League despite losing key players had made him one of the most highly-regarded options available.
Iraola will now take the reins at Anfield ahead of the World Cup with hopes that he can bring back the success Slot enjoyed in his first season.
