Liverpool fans celebrate as official statement confirms 'best bit of transfer business'
Liverpool have confirmed that Richard Hughes has stepped down from his role as sporting director.
The 47-year-old, who joined the club in the summer of 2024, informed the club of his desire to leave earlier this year and will join Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League.
The former Bournemouth technical director has become a hugely unpopular figure at Anfield, despite the Reds' Premier League-winning campaign in 2024-25.
Liverpool have regressed significantly in the year since, with many pointing to several unsuccessful transfer windows.
Hughes had overseen the signing of countless gems during his almost 10-year tenure with Bournemouth, but has failed to demonstrate the same eye for talent on Merseyside.
It is not just signings that have flattered to deceive, however - Liverpool have found themselves on the wrong end of several sales and unattractive contract situations.

Hughes' exit follows Michael Edwards' departure as CEO, indicating a reshuffle at Liverpool.
The sporting director leaves having spent around £700million during his time in charge, while bringing in around £250m in player sales.
High-profile examples of both have ultimately aged poorly. The departures of Jarell Quansah and Caoimhin Kelleher were seen as opportunities to cash in, but their replacements have either struggled to adapt, or been side-lined with huge injuries.
Last summer saw Liverpool spend a record amount of money as they looked to build on their title-winning success, but perhaps only Hugo Ekitike has looked to be worth the fee paid and the squad remains full of gaps.
New manager Andoni Iraola has now been left with a squad with just one recognised right-winger, and without any significant depth in the defence.
Hughes' departure was met with celebrations and a clear message from Liverpool fans. "Best bit of transfer business Liverpool have done this summer," wrote one fan.
Another said Hughes was "nothing but a failure and a stain to the club," with many repeating the word failure.
One Liverpool fan went as far as to describe the 47-year-old as the "worst thing that [has] happened to the club in the last decade".
What did Hughes say after stepping down?
It is unclear who Liverpool will appoint to replace Hughes, but there is a suspicion that technical director Julian Ward will be in the conversation.
"First and foremost, I would like to reiterate what I said upon my arrival – it has been a source of great pride to have been given the opportunity to serve this incredible and unique institution. That is something I will always be grateful for," he said after his departure was confirmed.
"My appreciation extends to ownership for their support and leadership, to club staff at all levels who give so much to make Liverpool FC what it is, to the players who make such an enormous contribution and to the fans who support the team in great numbers whenever and wherever games take place.
"I’ll always follow and support the club with great affection, and I wish everyone involved nothing but success for this season and beyond.”
