Liverpool should without question avoid letting Florian Wirtz leave after German media praised his latest international display against Greece.

Wirtz has continued to struggle at Liverpool since the start of this campaign after a tough debut season on Merseyside.

He has a long way to go to justify his £116million package fee from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025, with rumours ongoing around his future at Anfield.

The 23-year-old is set to attract attention from a host of top clubs ahead of January if he continues to flounder, with Bayern Munich believed to be particularly keen.

Wirtz's latest performance for his country and subsequent praise from national media both show that the Reds should not be so quick to get rid in the new year.

He has impressed for Germany under Jurgen Klopp and may have rediscovered his previous form ahead of Liverpool's return to action against Man City next weekend.

Florian Wirtz continues to shine for Germany as Liverpool return beckons

Wirtz netted his first competitive goal for club or country this season in Germany's 2-0 win over Serbia last Thursday.

He earned a successive start and captained his country as they travelled to face Greece in their final Nations League clash of this round of fixtures on Sunday.

Wirtz was the visitors' star man, as he created the joint-most chances (3) and completed the most dribbles (4) of any player on the pitch.

He took the second-most touches (8) in the opposition box, made nine passes into the final third and made more ball recoveries (8) than any Germany player, while also winning five of seven attempted ground duels.

His performance was clearly that of someone with their confidence back, despite Germany being held to a goalless draw in Thessaloniki.

Andoni Iraola should certainly be excited about what beckons for the 23-year-old when he returns to Merseyside, with a huge clash against City potentially set to be a turning point for Wirtz at Liverpool.

What did German media say about Wirtz vs Greece?

Wirtz has received criticism from the media at home and in England as he struggles to replicate his international form in the Premier League.

Several German outlets backed up his impressive stats against Greece with praise for his performance, with SPORT1 writing: "Wore the captain’s armband from the start this time and really led by example. He had plenty of touches in the first half and was involved in a corresponding number of moves."

While Sport.de also said: "Led Germany onto the pitch as captain and set the tone with his play. As he had done against Serbia, he created the space he needed with his light-footed movements and came close to scoring before half-time."

He was praised by Spox too, who wrote: "Time and again, Wirtz showed flashes of his technical brilliance, such as during a superb solo run that ended in a shot which was ultimately deflected. He was also very committed to the counter-press."
