Liverpool make stance clear on re-signing Darwin Nunez after Al-Hilal exit
Liverpool are not currently in the race to sign Darwin Nunez despite reports of their interest in re-signing him emerging in recent weeks.
Nunez scored 40 times in 143 appearances for Liverpool between 2022 and 2025, as he helped them win a Premier League title in his final season at the club.
The Uruguayan international moved to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal last summer, but has endured a tough time of things so far.
He struggled to score regularly in the first half of the campaign, then was dropped from their squad in February after the arrival of Karim Benzema.
Liverpool have been linked with a move as he prepares to leave Al-Hilal, but as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, they are focusing on other attacking targets as it stands.
Nunez is currently at the World Cup with Uruguay, but only appeared off the bench in their 2-2 draw against Cape Verde on Sunday evening.
He is still believed to be attracting interest from the Premier League, but a shock return to Merseyside is not on the cards as it stands.
Liverpool not set to make surprise move for Darwin Nunez
Sources have told Football Insider that Newcastle are moving to sign Nunez this summer, with his contract potentially set to be terminated by Al-Hilal.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "I don't think Liverpool, right now, have any plans to sign Nunez and bring him back to Anfield, having let him leave three years ago to make that move to Saudi Arabia.
"So yeah, I think it's a bit of a pie in the sky that one, that Nunez could be going back to Anfield."
Liverpool set to spend big again amid Hugo Ekitike concerns
Many fans could not believe what they were seeing when Liverpool splashed out nearly £500million last summer to bolster Arne Slot's squad.
The Dutchman failed to utilise their new talent and ended up losing his job last month, but his struggles have not discouraged Anfield chiefs from backing new boss Andoni Iraola.
Sources have told Football Insider that Liverpool will spend over £250m this summer to aid a title push under the ex-Bournemouth manager.
They have already seen a huge bid for Yan Diomande rejected by RB Leipzig, while several other targets are set to command lofty fees too.
