Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has placed his trust in Trey Nyoni to replace Curtis Jones rather than make a new signing, sources have told Football Insider.

Jones completed a £30million move to Inter Milan last week after months of speculation around his future.

The 25-year-old made 228 appearances for his boyhood club over eight years in the first team, but struggled to ever nail down a regular starting spot.

Liverpool have been eyeing several transfers to complete their summer business in the next eight days, but a new midfielder to replace Jones is not on their agenda.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Iraola has taken a liking to young starlet Nyoni and believes that he can step up to succeed his former teammate in a more prominent role.

The 19-year-old was on the bench as the Reds rescued a point at Newcastle in their Premier League opener on Sunday.

Trey Nyoni will be Liverpool's Curtis Jones replacement

Nyoni moved to Liverpool's academy from Leicester City in 2023, and has made 20 senior appearances in the last three seasons.

He featured in five pre-season friendlies under Iraola earlier this summer, and will be kept on as part of his squad following Jones' exit.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Curtis Jones leaving Liverpool is a blow, and it does weaken their midfield options, but it does look like Trey Nyoni will be given a more prominent role in that Liverpool midfield this coming season, having impressed Iraola in pre-season.

"He probably will be the man to step up into the void to fill the departure of Jones after he left Anfield for Inter Milan."

Bournemouth’s stance on accepting Tyler Adams offer revealed after Liverpool twist

Liverpool unlikely to complete Tyler Adams deal despite Iraola interest

Iraola has explored a move for a new midfielder this summer amid uncertainty around Alexis Mac Allister's future on Merseyside.

Despite interest in his old player, sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Bournemouth do not want to sell Adams to Liverpool this late in the window.

The USA international was key to their rise under Iraola and remains a key part of new manager Marco Rose's plans.

Liverpool are instead set to focus on bolstering their forward line before the 1 September deadline.
