Liverpool to open door for Cody Gakpo to join Tottenham when forward duo arrive
Liverpool could open the door for Cody Gakpo to join Tottenham after agreeing a new signing, sources have told Football Insider.
The 27-year-old has emerged as a leading target for Roberto De Zerbi's side, but any deal looks difficult to pull off as things stand given a lack of depth in the Reds' squad.
Andoni Iraola is aiming to strengthen his forward options rather than weaken them before the window closes, and is reluctant to see the Netherlands international move on.
However, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Gakpo could be allowed to leave Liverpool if they land a big-name signing in his position.
This comes as Liverpool continue to pursue moves for two Paris Saint-Germain wingers, Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye, in the final stages of the window.
Landing both players could open the door for Gakpo to move on, with Spurs keeping a close eye on his situation, but any deal would have to be done at the right price.
Could Tottenham make a move to sign Cody Gakpo?
Football Insider revealed on 9 August that Tottenham would have to make an offer of around £70million if they wanted to tempt Liverpool into selling Gakpo.
However, regardless of whether they come up with the funds, much will depend on whether Liverpool are able to bring in a replacement for him this summer.
Work is ongoing behind the scenes both at Liverpool and Tottenham, and while the deal has not been ruled out, there are a lot of moving parts behind the scene to make it happen.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "As things stand, right now, Liverpool do not plan on selling Cody Gakpo despite Tottenham's interest.
"A lot will depend on what Liverpool do on the incomings during the rest of the transfer window if more signings are to arrive, because Iraola does not want to weaken his squad.
"If the likes of Barcola and Mbaye, and potentially others, arrive at Anfield, then that could open the door for Cody Gakpo to leave Liverpool.
"The only way he could possibly move would be if Spurs were to make a huge offer of £70 million plus at least, and if Liverpool brought in more players.
"As I said, as things stand right now, with the squad a bit short, they can't really afford to like Gakpo go."
What is the latest on Liverpool's pursuit of a new winger?
Given the ongoing speculation about Gakpo's future at Anfield, there has been a renewed focus on the addition of a winger in the final month of the transfer window.
Mohamed Salah's departure and an overall lack of qulaity strength in depth out wide have made the position a top priority for the Reds this summer.
Football Insider revealed on 8 August that Liverpool are aiming to sign both Mbaye and Barcola this summer, with the PSG stars' deals both moving forward separately.
Mbaye, 18, has emerged as the Reds' latest target alongside their efforts to sign Barcola, 23, as talks with Paris Saint-Germain are expected to ramp up in the coming days.
Mbaye is predominantly a right-sided winger, while Barcola plays on the left, and the arrival of both players could provide the depth needed to let somebody else move on.
