Tottenham told Liverpool could accept Cody Gakpo offer on one condition

Tottenham Hotspur have been told they will have to pay around £70million to sign Cody Gakpo from Liverpool, sources have told Football Insider.

The 27-year-old is a leading target for Roberto De Zerbi's side in the closing stages of the summer transfer window, but it will not be an easy deal to agree with Liverpool.

Andoni Iraola views the Netherlands international as an important part of his plans, and will demand a huge fee to entertain talks about his future at this stage.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, it would take an offer upwards of £70million, and the Reds to sign a new winger, before they let him go.

Those conditions will make it a difficult deal for Spurs to do, with lots of moving parts involved which could complicate their efforts even if they are willing to pay the fee.

Tottenham have not been shy of spending big fees this summer, having already forked out almost £240million, but there are doubts about whether they will test Liverpool's resolve.

Could Tottenham make a move to sign Cody Gakpo?

Former Tottenham scout Bryan King told Football Insider on 3 August that Tottenham will have to sell players before making a move to sign Gakpo, further complicating their pursuit.

This comes as De Zerbi already has a number of available options in his attack, alongside the ongoing pursuit of Savinho, and a need to raise funds through player sales.

Regardless of Spurs' stance, though, Liverpool remain reluctant to let the forward leave in the near future and are hopeful that he will still be at the club when the season starts.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Well, there's definitely substance to Spurs' interest in Gakpo, but as things stand right now, Liverpool do not plan on selling Cody Gakpo.

"Liverpool have got Gakpo under a long-term contract until 2030, and they're under no financial pressure to sell.

"The only way he could possibly move would be if Spurs were to make a huge offer of £70 million plus at least.

"On top of that, it might be more likely if Liverpool brought in more players, because as I said as things stand right now with the squad a bit short, they can't really afford to let Gakpo go."

Which wingers could open the door for Gakpo to leave Liverpool?

Alongside their hefty financial demands, Liverpool are also believed to want another player through the door before they can think about sanctioning Gakpo's exit.

Iraola is keen to strengthen his attacking options rather than weaken them this month, and has a number of potential addtitions on his radar for the coming weeks.

Football Insider revealed on 31 July that Liverpool are moving closer to a deal for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, who is their top target this summer.

The France winger has been linked with leaving PSG after struggling for regular starts throughout last season, and has recently turned down an offer to extend his contract.

Liverpool are yet to make a formal offer for his services, but are stepping up their interest, and his arrival could make them more lenient with regard to Gakpo's future.
