Alexis Mac Allister has been hailed by the Argentine media for his role in their sensational 2-1 comeback victory over England in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals.

The 27-year-old Liverpool player started the match and helped pull the South American side over the line to reach their second World Cup final in a row.

After a tricky first half, the midfielder really stepped up, and hit the post shortly before Lautaro Martinez’s winner.

As a result, the Argentine media have hailed the performance, insisting that he “improved as the game went on” to help secure the memorable victory.

Mac Allister has had a wonderful World Cup to date and netted in the 3-1 victory over Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

The Liverpool star previously played a fundamental role in Argentina’s World Cup victory in 2022, which helped him earn a move to Merseyside.

Alexis Mac Allister rated among Argentina’s best vs England

Argentina’s victory against England will no doubt go down in the history books.

The World Cup holders could not find a way through the Three Lions’ stubborn backline before two goals in quick succession flipped the scoreline on its head.

Mac Allister was crucial to this late comeback, with his combinations with Lionel Messi causing all sorts of problems for England.

This was picked up by the Argentine media, with La Pagina Millonaria rating the midfielder a seven, before writing: “Improved as the game went on. He looked to link up on the left flank, but wasn't influential in the first half.

“He helped Tagliafico defensively against the advances of Rogers and James.

“In the second half, he combined with Messi several times near the penalty area and got into scoring positions: he had a header that hit the post and another that was straight at Pickford. Before the second chance, he hit the post.”

How good was Mac Allister vs England?

According to Fotmob on 16 July, Mac Allister had a solid game against England and is well deserving of the praise coming his way.

Overall, he completed 92 per cent of his passes, had two shots, three touches in the opposition box, a 0.42 xG, completed one tackle and four recoveries.

Therefore, if he can repeat this performance, the midfielder and Argentina will be confident that they can overcome Spain on Sunday and lift back-to-back World Cup trophies.

However, it remains to be seen who will come out on top in the final, with the Spanish on form themselves after knocking out France in their semi-final.

The final will kick-off at 8pm on Sunday, with Spain aiming for their second World Cup title, while Argentina are looking to claim their fourth.
