Alexis Mac Allister: Argentine media roast Liverpool star who was after his display vs Egypt
Alexis Mac Allister has been slammed for his performance by the media despite Argentina pulling off one of the greatest World Cup comebacks of all time as they beat Egypt 3-2 on Tuesday.
The World Cup champions came from 2-0 down to beat the North African side thanks to three late goals.
It was an almighty career for the South American nation, who were set to exit the tournament with just eight minutes of normal time to go.
Yet, despite the late heroics, the Argentine media have criticised many of the team’s performances, including that of Liverpool’s Mac Allister.
The midfielder started and played the full 90 minutes against Egypt, where he struggled throughout.
Mac Allister had been one of Argentina’s key players so far this World Cup, playing in each game, but Tuesday was a day to forget for the 27-year-old.
Alexis Mac Allister ‘forgettable’ vs Egypt
Going into the game, Mac Allister was on solid form for Argentina.
The midfielder picked up an assist against Cape Verde to help ensure the South American side’s progression into the round of 16, and was easily one of the best players on the pitch.
However, this did not continue against Egypt, as he struggled to have any influence in defence or in attack.
As a result, La Pagina Millonaria rated the Liverpool star a five for his display, and went on to write: “He positioned himself a few meters further forward, not as close to the baseline as in previous games, and participated much more in the build-up play.
“But he never truly took charge. He lacked explosiveness and dynamism.
“Completely overwhelmed in the second half. He offered no resistance defensively.
“A forgettable performance.”
How bad was Mac Allister vs Egypt?
According to Fotmob on 7 July, Mac Allister was not awful against Egypt.
Overall, he managed to create one chance, have two shots, complete 88 per cent of his passes and have two touches in the opposition’s box.
However, he also failed to complete a single cross or long ball, was dispossessed once and won zero aerial duels in what was an inconsistent display.
Nevertheless, a player of his quality will be hoping to bounce back quickly ahead of the quarter-finals.
Argentina will take on either Colombia or Switzerland for a place in the semi-finals, with the game set to take place on Sunday at 2am UK time.
From here, they could then face England in the semi-finals, who are set to take on Norway on Saturday in their quarter-final tie.
