Liverpool must make Florian Wirtz admission, Premier League leading stat proves it
Liverpool are now at the stage where they have to seriously consider the long-term future of attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz.
The German arrived at Anfield as a then-club-record buy for the Reds when they paid £116million for him back in 2025, but they are still waiting for him to truly catch fire.
The 23-year-old managed just five goals and three assists in the Premier League last term, as he failed to produce the lofty numbers expected for such a renowned talent.
Wirtz's struggles in 2025-26 were often attributed to him needing time to adapt to the style of the English game, but those issues have continued for him this term.
He has just one assist to his name after the opening six Premier League games, and failed to provide any spark for Andoni Iraola's team in their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City.
The former Bayer Leverkusen star currently leads the entire Premier League in one key metric, but it highlights his shortcomings more than anything else.
Florian Wirtz wasting good opportunities
Iraola opted to sacrifice Wirtz just four minutes after Ryan Gravenberch's red card against City, and that is perhaps symptomatic of where his performances are right now.
Both Arne Slot and now Iraola afforded him as much chance as possible to make an impact, but he has consistently failed to change games as expected.
Markstats revealed via his X account on Sunday evening that Wirtz is the Premier League's leading attacker when it comes to receiving passes, as he typically receives over seven per 90 minutes.
However, that is countered by the fact that he falls firmly in the middle of the pack when it comes to expected threat created (through passes and crosses).
That clearly highlights the fact that Wirtz regularly gets himself into good positions and is often found by his teammates, but then lacks the final ball to frequently create chances for his team.
He can surely no longer use an adaptation period as an excuse, given that he has now played 39 games of Premier League football, and that now points towards one clear route for Liverpool.
They are surely now at the stage where they must attempt to offload Wirtz, before the poor performances reduce his value any further.
Wirtz 'wants to join Bayern Munich'
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider back in September that Wirtz "would want to join Bayern Munich" if the chance arose in the upcoming windows.
The German champions held a strong interest in the youngster before he moved to England, and they remain clear admirers despite his struggles in the last 12 months.
Brown believes that Wirtz would welcome the chance to move back to his homeland, where he feels he is far more suited to the style of football on show.
Bayern's interest remains only at background level for now, but if they choose to step that up, then it would surely be a no-brainer for Liverpool to look to cash in.
