Liverpool sources: Update on Giorgi Mamardashvili's future
Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is pushing to become the club's number one goalkeeper this season, sources have told Football Insider.
The Georgian recently impressed during the Reds' Carabao Cup win over Spurs, and is now understood to be hopeful of getting Premier League minutes in the coming months.
However, it is understood that Andoni Iraola will only open the door for him to start in the league if Alisson picks up an injury at any stage.
Sources say that the Brazilian remains the "undisputed" number one option, despite some shaky performances at times last season.
The 33-year-old now has three consecutive clean sheets in the league and has started the new campaign in much stronger form.
Alisson's long-term future at Anfield remains up in the air, but for now at least, his position in the pecking order is clear.
Giorgi Mamardashvili to bank on Alisson's injury record
Mamardashvili is likely to be limited to opportunities in the domestic cup competitions, but he is sure to also be keeping a close eye on his counterpart's injury record.
Alisson's availability has dwindled slightly in recent years, with injuries beginning to set into his game on a fairly regular basis.
It has now been three seasons since he managed to play over 30 Premier League games in a single campaign, with last term's effort of 26 starts his lowest since moving to England back in 2018.
Those injury issues opened the door for Mamardashvili at times in 2025-26, and he will need to be ready in case the same happens again.
The 25-year-old managed 10 starts and 900 minutes of Premier League action last term, and it would be no surprise to see him reach a similar figure again this time around.
Alisson listening to offers to leave Liverpool
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider earlier in September that Alisson will be listening to offers that come his way ahead of his contract expiring next summer.
The ex-recruitment chief is clear that Liverpool will know about that stance, but are still likely to bide their time when it comes to their own decision over his contract.
Brown believes that the Merseysiders will hold off from making any sort of offer to Alisson until the final stages of the season, in order to fully assess his capability to continue as number one.
The veteran has now turned out for the Reds on over 330 occasions in all competitions, but there is a distinct possibility that this season could be his last in their colours.
