Alexis Mac Allister heavily underperformed as Argentina were defeated in the 2026 World Cup final without a fight.

Spain came away as the victors at MetLife Stadium on Sunday as Ferran Torres netted the only goal of the game in the 1-0 victory.

However, as good as the Spanish were, Argentina were equally as bad, and only managed their first shot in the 117thminute.

One of the most underwhelming players on the pitch was Liverpool star Mac Allister, who was unable to gain control of the midfield for the South American nation.

As a result, the Argentine media did not hold back when assessing his performance, labelling it ‘lacklustre’ as the country were unable to defend their World Cup title.

Mac Allister started against Spain and played the full 120 minutes of the match.

Alexis Mac Allister rated as one of Argentina’s worst players vs Spain

Against Spain, barely any of Argentina’s players performed as they seemingly targeted a victory on penalties.

The South American nation did not attack at all and were deservedly beaten by the Spanish.

Compared to their previous victory over England, multiple players were awful, with Mac Allister being one of the biggest disappointments.

The midfielder did not provide any attacking threat whatsoever and simply could not gain control of the midfield.

As a result, when assessing his performance, La Pagina Millonaria gave the 27-year-old a 3.5 rating, the second-worst on the team, before writing: “Lacklustre, like all the midfielders.

“He pressed high at times but barely touched the ball.

“Both victim and responsible for Argentina's lack of possession, he spent his time chasing down Spanish players whenever the opposition had the ball.”

How bad was Mac Allister vs Spain

Mac Allister certainly did not set the world alight in the 2026 World Cup final.

According to Fotmob on 20 July, many of his stats were simply awful against the Spanish.

Overall, he created zero chances, had zero shots, created a 0.01 xA, completed 83 per cent of his passes, was dispossessed twice, committed three fouls and won just 38 per cent of his ground duels.

For a player who had a solid tournament up until the final, Mac Allister will be heavily disappointed with his performance against Spain.

However, it remains to be seen if the midfielder will be able to bounce back with Liverpool ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, or if this display was a sign of what’s to come.
