Trent Alexander-Arnold is not a target for Liverpool at this moment in time despite their right-back concerns, sources have told Football Insider.

Alexander-Arnold's Real Madrid dream is stalling right now as he struggles for minutes under new boss Jose Mourinho.

He has started just three of their nine La Liga games so far this season, remaining an unused substitute in each of their last three league and European matches.

The 28-year-old angered Reds fans when he left for Real in 2025, but is now being linked with a shock return to his boyhood club.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Liverpool are not interested in re-signing Alexander-Arnold as it stands.

The England defender is set to continue to fight for his place in the Madrid team despite losing his starting spot to Federico Valverde.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's Liverpool return looks unlikely

Andoni Iraola is dealing with issues at right-back, with Liverpool yet to properly replace Alexander-Arnold since he left last year.

Jeremie Frimpong and Ronald Araujo have been battling to start there for Iraola since the season began, with Alexander-Arnold not likely to be the man to bolster the Reds' backline in January.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "I don't think there's anything concrete in that potential move back to Liverpool. There are always obvious links between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool...he was a great player for them before joining Real Madrid.

"He has struggled to hold down a regular place in the side this season under Jose Mourinho, with Valverde now being chosen ahead of him at right back as well, so there'll always be speculation over his situation."

Alexander-Arnold still loves Liverpool despite acrimonious exit

Alexander-Arnold was booed by Liverpool fans towards the end of his time at the club as they turned on him due to his decision to run his contract down before leaving for Madrid.

He also received a frosty reception at Anfield upon returning last November for a Champions League clash, with Reds fans still revelling in his downfall to this day.

The 28-year-old admitted in August that he still thinks highly of the club despite the way he left, saying: “Since leaving for Real Madrid, I’ve been back to Liverpool to visit family on a number of occasions. I still watch every game. I support them. I want to see them do well.

“There will always be a place in my heart for Liverpool, no matter what. I hope one day there’ll be a degree of understanding about the decisions I wanted to make around my own life.”
