Liverpool are looking at Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu ahead of the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The Reds' defence could be needing quite the shake-up next summer with contracts expiring and current players failing to impress.

Among those are Virgil van Dijk, who is in the final year of his contract, while Jeremie Frimpong has not reached the heights expected.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Kalulu, 26, is a player being tracked by the Merseyside club.

Liverpool will assess their options as they look to identify potential defensive reinforcements ahead of the upcoming transfer windows.

The French defender is an option available to cover in either fullback or central defence.

The Pierre Kalulu trait that appeals to Liverpool

Right-back is a position that Liverpool need to strengthen, and Kalulu would represent a two-for-one deal.

The future of many of Liverpool centre-backs are up in the air heading into next season, a situation that is not ideal for Andoni Iraola.

Van Dijk, as stated, is in his final year. Joe Gomez has notoriously had consistent injury problems; meanwhile, Ronald Araujo is only on loan.

Additionally, the impact of Giovanni Leoni's ACL injury from 2025-26 is still yet to be seen. The Italian has not yet returned after over a year from sustaining the blow.

So, Juventus' Kalulu could represent an opportunity for Liverpool to improve their options in two areas.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I revealed: "He’s somebody who’s on the radar; whether they make a move or not, that remains to be seen.

"He’s a versatile player, can play centre-back, right-back and also right wing back, and he’s been a consistent performer for Juventus."

Kalulu's position analysed amid Liverpool interest

As stated, Kalulu is a versatile defender, and that will be something that appeals to the Reds.

Araujo's loan signing has shown that Liverpool would be open to a centre-back and right-back hybrid, with the Uruguayan impressing at Anfield so far.

Whether or not that move becomes permanent remains to be seen.

However, with Kalulu, Liverpool would be getting their hands on someone quite similar in terms of positioning.

As per Transfermarkt, the Frenchman has played 150 times in central defence, with 92 as the right fullback.

Appealing numbers that certainly explain why Liverpool would be interested in the Juventus star.
