Stefan Borson: Liverpool will land 'best in the world' as 'they've got loads of money'

Liverpool are unlikely to follow in the footsteps of Manchester United's owners after Richard Hughes' departure at Anfield.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Reds have the three most important things to make appropriate next steps.

Hughes' exit was announced days after the summer transfer window slammed shut, with the sporting director seeking a new challenge in Saudi Arabia.

The 47-year-old had long been linked with the move away from Anfield, but he wanted to wait until the transfer window closed before leaving his post.

Mike Gordon is currently leading the search for Hughes' replacement, and it is an incredibly important job for a club currently falling behind the likes of Man City and Arsenal.

Man United had been challenging at the highest level over a decade ago, but thanks to multiple disastrous changes, the 20-time Premier League champions have slipped into mediocrity.

'Man United continue to pick the wrong people - Liverpool won't do that'

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson believes Liverpool have exactly what it takes to avoid falling into the same trap as United.

"Look, there's been so much change. One thing's for sure, they're going to try and find the best people in the world," he said.

"It's just that obvious. Two, they'll be able to recruit those people because it's Liverpool. And three, they've got loads of money.

"There's not going to be many problems. When you've got those three things in place, you're not going to have many problems.

"Now, you might make a bad hire, it might take time - in fact, it probably will - but you're not going to have too many problems long term.

"You've got all of those things going for you; you've just got to make sure that the people doing the picking don't do what, say, Manchester United did for five years, ten years.

"They seem to consistently pick the wrong people. You shouldn't fail in the scenario that we've just spoken about where you've got brand, people that want to work for you, unlimited budget, and the ability to recruit from anywhere in the world."

While Hughes was only making the decisions at Liverpool for two years, he can certainly leave with his head held high.

Dealing with Jurgen Klopp's departure would have been incredibly difficult for anyone, but he appeared to have done the best he could with Arne Slot's appointment.

The Reds won the Premier League title in the Dutchman's first season in England, but that fairytale story quickly turned sour in Slot's second term.

That must have been an incredibly stressful time at Anfield, and very few will be able to blame him for seeking the role in Saudi Arabia already.
