Stefan Borson responds to Liverpool investment interest from Jeff Bezos and Amit Bhatia
Liverpool are unlikely to reap the rewards of any behind-the-scenes minority sale from Fenway Sports Group (FSG).
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the consortium, led by British-Indian millionaire businessman Amit Bhatia, could only profit the owners this summer.
FSG have confirmed talks with Bhatia, son-in-law of the Indian billionaire businessman Lakshmi Mittal, who himself is worth £30billion, while Jeff Bezos, who has a net worth of $269bn (£200bn), has been approached to join them.
The owners last sold a minority stake in the club back in September 2023, a deal with Dynasty Equity, which was valued between £82million and £164m.
Understandably, supporters are excited about the prospect of more investment in the transfer market, especially after the departures Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson.
However, cold water could be poured over the prospect of eye-watering funds being made available depending on the structure of the consortium's deal with FSG.
FSG could profit from minority sale without giving extra funds to Liverpool
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson praised FSG's smart business, but did raise doubts over benefits for the Reds.
"I think FSG are very pragmatic and always have been. So where opportunities come to sell some of their stake, which I think is what it is, there's obviously two ways you can do a deal like this," he said.
"You can sell some shares in Liverpool, which will dilute FSG and bring new money into Liverpool, as opposed to into FSG.
"Or FSG can sell some of their stake, which will give money to FSG and not Liverpool. And let's say it's FSG selling down some of their stake...
"I think they're opportunistic and where you've got a very wealthy family coming along and saying they want to buy a piece of Liverpool at a very good, solid valuation, especially compared to what they paid, then they're going to go with that.
"And I think the timing is just because now's the time that somebody's come along. But I think most teams are open to investment of this sort of size and scale as long as the valuation's right."
Who could Andoni Iraola sign this summer?
Whether or not the new consortium bring more funds to table, Andoni Iraola is still being expected to spend big ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
Speaking to Football Insider, Borson previously backed the Reds to sign PSG's Bradley Barcola, as well as spending "big" on other stars.
Virgil van Dijk has at least one more season left at Anfield, but the club will soon have to consider who his successor will be for years to come.
Yan Diomande, Maghnes Akliouche and even Mainz's Kaishu Sano have been linked with a move to Anfield, and more details are expected to be completed.
