Liverpool to land '£30m' from Virgil Van Dijk sale

Liverpool won't be able to get more than £10million fee for Virgil van Dijk this summer but they will effectively land £31m in total.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Reds "milked" the duo of Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk for one season too many.

Recent reports have suggested that the Merseysiders may sell the 35-year-old veteran, who is out of contract at Anfield at the end of 2026-27.

Wyness believes that clearing the Dutchman's wages would provide the biggest benefit for Liverpool, given his lack of value in today's transfer market.

Van Dijk penned a new two-year contract at Anfield back in April 2025, but Wyness has already made it clear that he feels that decision was a mistake.

With the club now contemplating a potential sale, he is in no doubt that there is not much value to be gained in terms of a transfer fee.

Virgil van Dijk only worth £10m

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Liverpool would be willing to accept as little as £10m for Van Dijk this summer.

The defender played every single minute in the Premier League last season, but found himself under fire for his form at times.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness emphasised that Liverpool may see value in clearing his wages from their books.

"He's into the last year of his contract. He's still a very valuable player to some teams. He's probably got another couple of seasons left. But the value for Liverpool is getting rid of his wages," he said.

"I believe he's on something close to £400,000 a week, and that is the key issue for Liverpool. I think they would probably take £10m for him to get rid of those wages and try and get the balance back.

"It was a mistake to have given him the last big increase, as it was with Salah. So there have been some big mistakes and Liverpool will be the first to admit that over the last few years. It's about the value of getting that wage bill down and trying to manage it and getting that new blood in at a different age.

"They've really milked Salah and Van Dijk probably a season too much. But if he's on £400,000 a week, where does he go? Who can afford that sort of deal and package for him when he's only got probably two or three seasons, maximum two to go?

"Look, it's a difficult one. Liverpool may end up having him for this season."

Liverpool turn attention to signing Gilberto Mora as he's dubbed 'one of best in the world'

Liverpool turn attention to signing Mexican star

Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Liverpool have joined the race to sign Mexican sensation Gilberto Mora this summer.

The Tijuana midfielder is currently on the radar of almost all of European football's elite clubs, and is viewed as one of the best young talents emerging at the moment.

The 17-year-old starred for Mexico in the World Cup, becoming his country's youngest ever debutant at the tournament.

Mora notched six goals and one assist in 20 games in the Mexican top flight last term, and it is expected to be a matter of time before he takes his talents to Europe.
