'We can't have this' - Jeff Bezos backed to 'put hand in his pocket' for Liverpool's January overhaul

Amit Bhatia and Jeff Bezos could reach into their pockets to back Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola during the January transfer window.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the new minority owners should "watch and learn" at Anfield.

Keith Wyness has recently hit out at the Reds' decision to rehiring Julian Ward as Richard Hughes' replacement as the club's new sporting director.

Following Hughes' departure to Saudi Arabia, the Merseyside giants were expected to hire an external big name, but that didn't come to fruition.

The former Premier League board member predicted a bigger role from Bhatia and Bezos, who bought a 38 per cent stake in Liverpool via their consortium.

Attention is already turning to the January transfer window, with Iraola's side sitting sixth in the Premier League table, but even that might be too soon for a bigger impact.

Liverpool's minority owners to splash the cash in January

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson stated that the most the new owners should be doing is putting more cash into the club.

"They shouldn't have a say at all in my mind right now. They should just watch and learn and allow the football side of things to do its thing," he said.

"They might want to accelerate building the squad, and that means putting their hand in their pocket and either lending the club or subscribing for shares.

"That's possible. I think in one of two scenarios, either way there's an opportunity for them to do things this season in a significant way.

"So maybe they'll go, 'Actually, why don't we give the club a good chance in the second half by buying a couple of players?' That's one possibility.

"The other possibility is that things are not going well. In which case they say, 'Look, we can't have this. We didn't buy this to be mid-table; we bought this to be winning and be in the Champions League'.

"So they might get a couple of players to have a better second half of season. In either one of those situations, you could see it happening."

Who could Andoni Iraola add to his squad?

If the minority owners really are eager to make additions to the squad, there are plenty of options available for the Reds.

Football Insider understands that Gilberto Mora would cost £40million, with the Reds tracking the Mexican wonderkid for quite some time now.

Brentford's Kevin Schade and Alex Scott of Bournemouth are both of interest, especially the latter, who has worked with the manager previously.

While Liverpool are currently sitting outside of the top-four spots in the Premier League, only five games have been played so far. There's plenty of football left to play.
