Tottenham winger Lucas Moura has delivered the sensational verdict that the club could win the Champions League this season after he made his debut against Rochdale on Sunday.
The Brazilian winger, who arrived at the north London club from Paris Saint Germain in a £25million deal over the January window, made his very first start for the club against the League One basement club, and marked the occasion with a well taken goal.
However he and his team mates were unable to secure progression to the quarter finals after Dale netted a late equaliser to make it 2-2 at Spotland, and as was the case against Newport County in the previous round, Spurs will need a replay at Wembley to make it to the next round.
Despite what will be a disappointing result for Tottenham, Lucas has claimed that there is no reason why the club cannot go on to pull off what would be a shock and secure glory in Europe’s premier club competition, the Champions League.
He told Sky Sports: “Why not? The Champions League is the most difficult cup but I think we have the capacity to win. If we always think positive, always work hard.
“I think we did a big game against Juventus away. It’s not easy to score in Italy.
“I think we had a good result and the next game I am sure that we can win, that we can do a big game with our fans and to continue.”
After going through the group stage unbeaten, which included victory at home against reigning champions Real Madrid, Tottenham were drew against last season’s runners up Juventus in the next round, and pulled off an impressive 2-2 draw in the first leg after going down 2-0 in the opening 10 minutes.
Pulling off the ultimate success in the Champions League would be a major shock by Spurs, who have never made it past the quarter finals of the competition.
